The exhibition, elliptical illusion, plays on the idea of elusive meaning. It sees context as critical in interpreting meaning(s) – be it words or images in association or independent of each other. The works have reference to socio-political contexts that may not always be readily interpreted due to the language used or to the perceived association of particular words to each other – or to a deliberate masking of meaning through esoteric or venacular use of language. Irony and humour are evident in the content, as are puns, disassociation and diverse symbolism. Similarly, poetry can often generate multiple illusions through the relationship between words.

A literary similarity is taken from the novel In the Country of Last Things (Paul Auster):

… I learned to expect a good deal of confusion whenever (he) opened his mouth. He was fond of obscure pronouncements and elliptical allusions … (pp145-146)

The introduction of words/text/language into visual art – in an era of literate populations – is often thought to clarify ambiguities in the reading of images. The use of text may seek to subvert the hierarchy of ‘fine art academia’ by employing known terminology to explicate the meaning or intention of the work. It also has been used to perpetuate the effect of amorphic existence and multiple interpretation.

All of the artists have extensive international experience in a wide range of practices - many employing humour and irony to reveal current socio-political issues particular to individual cultures or globally. The works in the exhibition have been selected as they address the idea of the ephemeral or the uncertain – that which is often in limbo between the known and the unknown/the then and now/the near and the far …
