Susana Anagua and Ana Romana collaborated to resolve the multi-faceted work, Matinha. It involved installing text in the abandoned gasometers of the site, recording aspects of the site and the text insitu, then filming a video incorporating images of the text within the specific location and broader views of the surrounding area.

In brief, the subject of the work is a now abandoned gas-works set within what was then, farmlands (1940s), on the outskirts of Lisbon along the River Targus. The artists researched accounts of the work environment as told by labourers in interviews by the company, upon closure of the industry. Various components of these interviews constitute the content of the text installed by the artists and form the basis of the voice-over of the video.

The work does not address a moral viewpoint on the effects of the industry on the socio-environmental context in which it existed, rather it seeks to remain as neutral as possible in the presentation – subtly reflecting the shifts in attitude and social or cultural practice over the time since the site was constructed during WW ll.
