Eden is synonymous with Paradise. The defining features of the ideal Utopia, purity and innocence, are not divorced from a state of ignorance. Conversely, the fall from grace is off-set by knowing, value and judgement – conscience and consciousness. However, corruption and the affected are recognised negative responses to what is perceived as the positive aspects of freedom from the dictates of a state of grace. Weakness, greed and a belief in the inherent evil of humankind are the conditions likely to feed a Post-Eden demise.
The artists in this exhibition reveal aspects of the Post-Eden condition of the individual and of society – each artist refers to elements of the antithetical states of behaviour and values to an ideal Paradise.
